In
1677 Charles II agreed to the marriage of his nephew,
William of Orange to Mary, the eldest daughter of James,
Duke of York. James ascended the throne in 1685, and in
November 1688 William attempted to invade England 'to
protect the Protestant religion and parliamentary liberties.'
As a Catholic, James II was extremely unpopular and finally
fled the country in December 1688, dropping the Great
Seal of England into the Thames on his way. As a result,
William and Mary were proclaimed joint rulers and were
crowned as King and Queen in April 1689. Mary died in
1694 and William III in 1702, leaving the throne to his
wife's sister Anne. Although William was never popular,
his reign brought stability to the country, introduced
the system of National Debt, and helped to found the Bank
of England.
