The
House of Stewart or Stuart is a Scottish family from which
came the royal line of sovereigns of Scotland and later
of Great Britain. James I of England and VI of Scotland
took the throne in 1603, and was followed by his son,
the unfortunate Charles I and, after the period of the
Commonwealth, by his grandson, Charles II. The Stewarts
continued to reign over the country until the death of
Queen Anne in 1714. George I, Elector of Hanover, who
was the grandson of Elizabeth Stewart (daughter of James
I) then took the throne. 'Bonny Prince Charlie' - the
young Pretender - was the centre of Jacobite hopes in
the mid-18th century. In 1745 he landed with seven followers
in the Hebrides, gained much support in Scotland and headed
for London with 6,500 men. He was finally defeated at
the Battle of Culloden Moor. Prince Charles Stewart evaded
capture and was assisted in his flight by Flora MacDonald
who helped him escape to Brittany dressed as her maid,
Betty Burke. Our present queen, a descendant of George
I, has Stewart blood in her veins.
