The
House of Orange-Nassau has occupied the throne of the
kingdom of the Netherlands for several centuries. Queen
Beatrix succeeded to the throne in 1980, following the
abdication of her mother Queen Juliana. She married Prince
Claus, Jonkheer von Amsberg in 1966. The heir to the throne
is Prince Willem Alexander, born in 1967. He has two brothers
Prince Johan Friso and Prince Constantijn. The House of
Windsor came into being on 17 July 1917, when King George
V adopted the name of Windsor for himself and his descendants.
Elizabeth II acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952,
following the death of her father, George VI. She had
married Philip, formally Prince of Greece and Denmark
in 1947. He takes his title of Duke of Edinburgh through
his grandfather, Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria.
They have four children of whom Charles, Prince of Wales,
is heir to the throne.
