Charles
I and Henrietta Maria had a total of nine children. Two
of them were to become kings of England - Charles II,
and his brother James II. Two of his daughters were Henrietta
Anne and Mary, the first Princess Royal. Mary became the
Princess of Orange when she married William of Orange
in 1641 - eventually to become King William II of the
Netherlands. Their son, also William, became Captain General
of the Dutch forces and, following the assassination of
Jan de Witt, the Grand Pensionary, he was chosen to become
Stadhouder of the United Provinces of the Netherlands.
In 1672 he was responsible for repelling the invading
French army (supported by the English) by opening the
dykes and letting in the sea. Peace was eventually established
with England by the marriage of the younger William to
Mary, the daughter of James, Duke of York (later James
II).
