Eleanor
Gywn (or Gwynne) was born of humble parents in Pipe Lane
(now Gwynne Street), Hereford, around 1650. The house,
which has long since disappeared, was on the opposite
side of the street to the Left Bank Village shops. Known
to all as Nell or Nellie, she first earned a established
as a comedienne. 'Pretty, witty Nell' became one of the
several mistresses of Charles II and had at least one
son by the king. She is said to have persuaded Charles
to found the Royal Hospital in Chelsea as a home for army
pensioners. They wear a red and black uniform which seems
to be based on the one she had seen worn by the residents
of Coningsby's Hospital in Hereford, founded in 1617.
