Roger
Kemble was born in Hereford on 1 March 1721. He became
a travelling theatre manger, putting on productions in
halls and inns throughout the country. His eldest daughter,
Sarah, was born at the Shoulder of Mutton Inn in Brecon.
As an actress, she was a child prodigy and at the age
of 18 married William Siddons. She had successes at Drury
Lane and Covent Garden, becoming the 'queen' of the stage.
Her brothers, John Philip and Stephen also became famous
actors - John Philip eventually became manager of Covent
Garden.
An earlier John Kemble was a recusant Herefordshire priest
who was executed for his Catholic beliefs on Widemarsh
Common, Hereford on 22 August 1679 aged 80. Before his
execution he smoked a last pipe with his executioner as
they both sat under the scaffold. After being raised to
become the Blessed John Kemble several years ago, he is
now Saint John Kemble. His body lies in Welsh Newton churchyard
in south Herefordshire, but in St Francis Xavier's Church
in Broad Street there is a reliquary that contains the
saint's left hand.
