The
Commonwealth was founded after the first Civil War and
the young Charles Stewart was forced into exile. Following
the execution of his father in 1649, the young Prince
of Wales first assumed the title of king and then landed
in Scotland to be proclaimed king at Scone on the 1st
of January 1651. From there he invaded England, but was
routed by Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester. He escaped
and hid with a Major Carlos in the famous Royal Oak at
Boscobel. From there he went to Bentley Hall near Walsall,
the home of Colonel Lane. He had to get to the coast and
was helped by Jane, the daughter of Colonel Lane, who
needed to visit her pregnant sister in Abbot's Leigh.
Charles was to accompany her dressed as William Jackson,
a servant. He had to make the journey riding double on
a horse, with Jane seated behind him, as was expected
at that time. Jane continued to help him through several
adventures until Charles finally left England on 15 October
1651 having been on the run for six weeks. He was to spend
the next nine years in exile in France and the Netherlands
before returning to take the throne of England, entering
London in triumph on his birthday, 29 May 1660.
