The Henrietta Room Back to rooms
Henrietta Anne, Duchess of Orleans, was the youngest daughter of Charles I of Great Britain and sister of Charles II. She was born in Exeter in 1644, during the height of the Civil War, and had to flee to France with her mother, Henrietta Maria, where she was brought up. It was there that she married Phillipe, the bisexual brother of King Louis XIV of France, who was known simply as Monsieur. From that time on she was addressed as Madame de France or just 'Madame', and was probably the mistress of the French king. Although of a sickly nature, she was ravishingly pretty and throughout most of her short life was very close to her brother Charles II, who called her Minette. In 1670 she helped him to arrange the secret Treaty of Dover with Louis XIV, wherein Charles agreed to join the Catholic faith. Henrietta died suddenly on 30 June 1670 of acute peritonitis caused by a perforated duodenal ulcer, although it was rumoured at the time that she had been poisoned. She was only 26 years old. She had two daughters; the eldest, Anne-Marie, married a Duke of Savoy and from that union has descended the present Hapsburg claimant to the English throne. However, the claim cannot be met for a Catholic is prohibited by Act of Parliament from occupying the throne of Great Britain.
