Charles
Howard, the 11th Duke of Norfolk, married Frances Scudamore
of Holme Lacy in 1771 and was later elected Chief Steward
of the city. Election of 'one famous and discreet man'
to this honorary post was granted to the citizens of Hereford
by James I in 1620. He rebuilt the historic Swan and Falcon
Inn in Broad Street and renamed it the City Arms. Most
of the building still stands - but now as a branch of
Barclays Bank. The 11th duke had quite a reputation in
the city and was once seen astride a barrel of beer in
High Town distributing its contents during the progress
of an election. An ancestor on his wife's side was the
first Viscount Scudamore who, on his Holme Lacy estate
during the 17th century, developed the Redsteak, a famous
cider apple. The Duke of Norfolk is the earl marshal of
England and premier Catholic duke of the realm. Amongst
his many titles is that of Baron Clun, after a small town
and castle in Shropshire, a short distance outside the
Herefordshire border.
