David
Garrick, the great English actor, was born at the Angel
Inn in Widemarsh Street in 1717. His father, Captain Peter
Garrick, was probably stationed in Hereford and had made
arrangements for his wife, Arabella, to stay at the Angel.
A few days later the family left Hereford and the young
David was educated at Lichfield and studied Latin and
Greek under Samuel Johnson. The Angel was destroyed by
fire in the early 19th century, but a small plaque on
the building records the famous birth. Garrick's first
major success on the stage was as Richard III, but he
was equally at home with tragedy, comedy and farce, and
performed at Drury Lane for many years. He died in 1779
and is buried in Westminster Abbey.
