Charles
married Catherine of Braganza, daughter of John IV, King
of Portugal, in 1662. He was a patron of racing and a
lover of women. However, he was also an astute ruler and
was once described as being 'Father of his People' - he
was certainly the father of a good many of them for at
least 12 children from seven women show in the royal records,
four of them called Charles! He had no legitimate heirs,
but six of his children were given dukedoms - the prerogative
of royal children. Included amongst them were Lucy Walter's
son who became Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch; the son
of Louise de Kroiialle who became Duke of Richmond and
Lennox whilst Nell Gwyn's surviving son became the Duke
of St Albans. He certainly did not penalise his sons for
their illegitimate births! During his reign there was
the Great Plague of London in 1665, followed by the Great
Fire a year later. Charles, who founded the Royal Society,
died at Whitehall Palace on 6 February 1685 and is buried
in Westminster Abbey. He was succeeded by his brother
James.
