The Cavalier Suite Back to rooms
England was plagued with Civil Wars for some 18 years between 1642 and 1660. Charles I had ascended the throne in 1625, but his marriage to Henrietta Maria, daughter of Henry IV of France and a fervent Catholic, and his constant disagreements with Parliament led to the start of the first Civil War on 22 August 1642 when Charles raised his standard at Nottingham. Most of Herefordshire supported the king and his followers, the Cavaliers, so called for their fine clothes and reckless conduct. They were opposed by the dour parliamentarian troops - the Roundheads. There were many battles and in 1645 the city of Hereford was under siege by the Scots army for six weeks until the king came to its relief. By that time the battle was almost lost and in 1646 Charles surrendered to Parliament. He was arraigned before a tribunal of 135 judges, but refused to plead. Sentence was passed by 68 votes to 67 - by one vote Charles lost his head, being executed in Whitehall on 30 January 1649. Following this, Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector and the Commonwealth had begun.
