Charles
II finally ascended the throne of England in 1660. Some
time later Nell Gwyn became his mistress. She had at least
one son by the king - Charles Beauclerk. A second son
apparently died at an early age. At that time royalty
tended to acknowledge their mistresses and their bastard
children and Charles was first made Earl of Burford and
then Duke of St Albans. The quasi-royal line is still
represented in the present Duke of St Albans, whose surname
is still Beauclerk. His heir takes his father's second
title, Earl of Burford, as a courtesy title.
